Discover Discover Culture 360

Hi everyone! Welcome to my world of cultures! My name is Naina, and this is the first time I’ve tried to create anything like this, my very own virtual diary of cultures from around the world that has taken the form of a blog website –  Discover Culture 360!

A Little About Me…

I am 15 years old, well nearly 16, and live in New Jersey with my parents, my younger brother, and a beloved new addition to our family, Ellie, our golden retriever puppy. I am of Indian descent, born in the UK and moved to the U.S. as a young child. So, I suppose a rich blend of cultures and travel has always been part of my family life.

We travel to the UK every summer to visit my dad’s family.  My parents always said that “travel is the best education.”  I didn’t necessarily understand what my parents meant by that when I was younger, but when I think of all the amazing experiences that I have had of being able to try different cuisines, hearing different languages, learning about other countries and their cultures, I realize how fortunate I am to have had them.

I mean, even the UK, where they speak the same language as us in America, is so different.  For example, my dad, who grew up in the UK, eats FRIES with a FORK! There are also so many different words they use from us.  They say ‘Loo’ for Bathroom, ‘Lift’ for Elevator, and ‘Holiday’ for a vacation.  Well, I love that I have family in the UK and am able to go on ‘holiday’ to go see them and experience something new every year!

Why I Started This Blog…

Cultural stories, food, festivities have always been part of my family life.  I’ve never known anything different.  But the first time I had a chance to meet kids, my own age, from multiple countries and continents, all in one space, was when I started volunteering with a local non-profit refugee resettlement agency.  As part of their services, the non-profit organized quarterly social gatherings where volunteers and refugee families brought food and assembled together under one roof to share a meal and some conversation.  Over time, I got to know kids from countries in Africa, the Middle East and Central America…. countries that I had never heard of or known existed.  Learning about these countries, their people, their culture, their ways of living, their beliefs gave me a whole different perspective that I never had before. And I thought… if I didn’t know much about these cultures from around the world and enjoyed learning about them, then why not keep doing it and share what I have learnt. I am sure there must be other people curios about similar things and might find it interesting to go on this journey of exploration with me.  So, come on over and let’s find out about a different country each week (or maybe every two weeks… haha.  I don’t want to over commit! 😊)
